Background

International Program for Islamic Economics and Finance, Department of Economics, Faculty of Economic and Business, Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (IPIEF FEB UMY) aims at promoting towards a reputable international program on Islamic Economics, Banking and Finace in ASEAN by 2021. To achieve such vision, IPIEF FEB UMY focuses on four missions including: internationalization, academic excellence, research core based, and empowering people.

According to such vision and mission, IPIEF FEB UMY attempts to organize events which are covered into “IPIEF Shariah Economic Days”, called: “National Workshop on Islamic Macroeconomics”

Islam is a perfect religion that was revealed through His messenger. Practically, Islamic teaching inspired human behavior which finally directs human knowledge suitable with Islamic worldview.  Islamic worldview refers to a general conception on the nature of the world, particulaly implying a system of value-principles.  On this regards, a system of value principles shall be inspired by Islamic tenets or Islamic moral philosophy.

Islamic worldview is compulsory paradigm of every Muslim. This worldview would help answering questions on why, and how human being exist.  As consequence, Muslims are required to have a certain knowledge on how to integrate between knowledge and Islamic teachings, which is then called as Islamization of Human knowledge.  Having seen that Islamization of human knowledge is important, some Islamic scholars such as At Attas and Al Faruqi involve in an attempt to Islamize human knowledge. Islamization of human knowledge desribes a variety of attempts and approaches to synthesize the ethics of Islam into contemporary knowledge.

The Islamization of human knowledge is set as a response the fundamental crisis of the modern-day ummah that have misconception of knowledge. This condition implies to a need for curriculum reform particularly in Islamic economics program. However, the further challenge in terms of Islamizing it is that, the curriculum should have the ability to shed light the different between what is considered as knowledge and not. Finally, correct identification of knowledge can avoid “confusion of knowledge” and prevent “the loss of adab” among Muslim ummah.

Having realized the importance of Islamization of human knowledge, there is a need for an intensive discourse, and evaluate the current progress of this efforts.  Therefore, to further strengthen the efforts and accelerate its progress, International Program for Islamic Economics and Finance (IPIEF) puts highly concern of this Islamization of knowledge agenda by organizing an international workshop on Islamic Macroeconomics.

A workshop on teaching Islamic economics have been regularly organized, such as by International islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and International Research and Training Institute (IRTI). The workshop is motivated by the exponential introduction of Islamic economics program, whether these programs are in the form of stand alone, combination, or spesialization approach. These conditions further imply to a significant variation in terms of design and contents of the economics curriculum globally, particularly macroeconomics.

According to various discussions and workshops, there are various issues are ientified:

  1. Variation in program nomenclature
  2. Lack identification and distinct clasrification of program structure
  3. Variation of program specialiation, particularly in undergraduate program
  4. Lack specification of program domains in important areas of Islamic economics
  5. Variation in Islamic economics prescribed core course and required electives
  6. Lack compatibility for program recognition and accreditation among education institutions

The workshop intends to provide a coherent framework on macroeconomic curriculum from Islamic perspective that facilitate consistent and coherent development of curriculum in Islamic macroeconomics, particularly for undergraduate program. Hence, this workshop is a continuous effort and step in the harmonization process with the eventual development of standards for Islamic macroeconomics education, either locally or globally.
